Hydrodynamic Interaction Between Two Flexible Finite Length Coaxial Cylinders: New Theoretical Formulation and Numerical Validation

Abstract This article addresses the interaction of two coaxial cylinders separated by a thin fluid layer. The are flexible, have finite length, and subject to vibration mode an Euler–Bernoulli beam. Assuming narrow channel, inviscid linear theoretical approach is carried out, leading new simple tractable analytical expression forces. We show that dimensionless form this matrix reduces single coefficient whose properties (sign variations) strongly depend on boundary conditions, wave number modes, aspect ratio cylinders. All these made explicit in our formulation, which applies all classical types conditions. A numerical based arbitrary Lagrange–Eulerian method also presented successfully compared predictions.
